What is Sciatica? – part 1

It is one of the most common forms of pain mainly because of modern lifestyle, sedentary, overweight and also by a potential injury.

Sciatica (i.e. the pain sensation in the sciatic nerve) is caused by the pressure on the sciatic nerve somewhere in the waist and can occur either suddenly or some pain or discomfort may be preexisted in the middle and has deteriorated.

The pain may be localized or the entire foot, or only at some points (e.g. the tibia or fingers) and the patient may feel numbness or weakness of the lower end. In the course of it, the pain may be continuous or intermittent.

Sciatica usually occurs suddenly or gradually over a few days after moving or lifting weight and often without any apparent cause. The pain is often accompanied by other problems such as numbness or hypoesthesia (decreased sensation of the skin) in the leg and muscle weakness that can cause difficulty or “drag” of the foot when walking.

  • Muscle weakness, numbness or difficulty moving the leg or foot

Caution: Along with pain / numbness / weakness in a leg and difficulty in urination, then the patient should contact the doctor immediately because there is the possibility that there is a large (central) hernia of an intervertebral disc with nerve pressure that is needed for important functions such as urination and can lead to serious permanent damages.
